A college thesis is not as time-consuming or all-encompassing as a post-graduate research paper. Teachers understand the relative maturity of college students and also the limitations of their education and thus only expect a definitive work of decent, but not excessive scope.
You have to keep certain things in mind, however to give your thesis a character; an identity. You cannot leave it as an unheeded newspaper in the garbage. Here is drawing up a writing manual to help you.
Now, you have to follow the APA format; writing double spaces and leaving an inch margin on both sides; using the 12 pts Times New Roman font. You have to write a credible introduction and conclusion, punctuated by the critical thesis.
100 years of solitude is a story of reality floating on sheets of dreams. Gabriel Garcia Marquez sews the shreds of his grandmother’s imagination into a beautiful, flowing and layered story. He sprouts characters out of his brainchild village Macondo and elucidates how everything, wherever it goes returns to the same fold. The motto of the story is – ‘Circle is Eternal’ and what takes your breath away is the seamless scenes of magical realism. You find credibility in a child floating in the sky but get amazed at reading about a train. You feel the lush of indicative yellow flowers believable but remain hard-pressed to believe in adultery. The passage of reality through ghosts, dreams and mercury makes this creation a masterpiece.
You have to take the reader through emphatic sections of the book and make them realize the metaphorical significance of characters. You have to suggest how the book conforms to the style of an epic. There are several instances where the writer’s skullduggery is evident – How Jose Arcadio Buendia is man enough to kill Prudencio Aguilera and weak enough to burst into tears in front of a timid ghost. How Pilar Ternera turns the era through profusion of fertility. How the book fights throughout against incest only to sink in the end into the caramel of two relatives’ orgasm.
Go through the book. Find your own perspective and the critique angle. You will feel privileged to write its conclusion. Just for information, it is said to inspire ‘Midnight’s Children’ which was a clear inspiration for ‘The God of Small Things’.
Cite the extracts of the book as sources as also a few genuine critics of the book. Your work will be sharp-edged and complete.
